Combatting Redness with the Ordinary Soothing & Barrier Support Serum

It feels like the talk of the skincare socials lately are about damaged skin barrier, skin-barrier repair, and skin barrier support. Thankfully the Ordinary has introduced the Soothing & Barrier Support Serum to help combat just these issues.  But what does all of this mean?  I’m here to help break it down so you can know if this new comprehensive serum is for you.

What is the skin barrier?

The skin barrier, is the outermost layer of the skin composed of skin cells and lipids. Think of the skin barrier as a protective shield for your skin. It plays a crucial role in preventing moisture loss, defends against environmental stressors, and maintains skin health. A strong and healthy barrier is the key to skin hydration! It also helps to reduce dryness and irritation, the look of redness, and overall helps to avoid premature aging.

Why I love product from the Ordinary?

If you have read my blog before, you know that I love products from the Ordinary. I have another post that I discuss other products from them that I love here..  The company is built on getting clinical results with their affordable skin care products. They are an easy brand to get started with your skincare routine because you don’t have to spend a lot of money to try out a product.  So much of skincare is about trying out products to find the one specifically for your skin. The Ordinary make this possible with great products for your skin AND the wallet.

How does the Ordinary Soothing & Barrier Support Serum help the skin barrier?

This Soothing Barrier Support Serum is a multi-active solution that targets irritated skin, reducing the overall look and increasing your skin health. Through clinical testing, the pink serum has shown improvement in the skin barrier health in just 2 hours & an immediate boost in skin hydration. The vitamin B is one of the 8 key ingredients and is responsible for the serum’s characteristic pink hue.  It also helps to reduce redness and dryness. Overall when they all work together these ingredients give the skin a smoother appearance and reduce the look of uneven texture. This is something that plagues my damaged 40-something skin.

How to use the Ordinary Soothing & Barrier Support Serum?

So when trying out a new product, its always best to test one product at a time.  This Soothing & Barrier Support Serum can be used in your am routine or pm routine.  The Ordinary reccomends that you don’t mix this with Vitamin C products. I recommend Vitamin C in your am routine, and this serum for your PM routine.  The easy routine to use this product is:

  • Wash face with cleanser
  • Apply a few drops of the pink serum
  • Apply your favorite moisturizer
  • For your morning routine, apply SPF.

Is the Ordinary serum worth the hype?

I tried this serum out for 3 weeks.  With any skincare product that i’m testing, I like to use it for a while to isolate the change in my skincare. If I only change one thing at a time if I have a reaction, I know which product is irritating the skin. My skin had no negative reaction with this product which was great news.  Immediately my skin felt extra soft and even though its pink in color, I saw a reduction in visible redness. While I prefer most of my skincare to be fragrance free, this product does have a little smell to it.  I heard someone  equate it to the paint aisle at a hardware store but to me it wasn’t that intense. If you do have issues with scented skincare you may want to take a whiff of this one before you purchase.

Verdict:  Should you try this product?

This product is a great affordable option if you are looking for a product that will target redness and build a strong skin barrier.  The topical delivery of key skin components helps increase the skin’s hydration and support skin barrier health.  It’s great on all skin types, sensitive skin and even my normal-dry skin. Plus it has an affordable price point that makes trying this out low risk. As with any products, if you have any skin discomfort, discontinue use.  Not every product is for every person.

This product can be purchased a the Ordinary’s official website here. They have a very generous 365 return policy for all products, as long as there is at least 50% of the product left in the bottle.  If you try this and it isn’t for your skin, you can fear not and return it directly to them.  Or if you prefer to buy in store at one ot the Ordinary’s partners, I recommend Ulta for their great rewards program and return policy.
