Embarking on the Journey to Plumper Lips: A First-Timer’s Guide to Lip Fillers

I’ve always been fascinated with having plump lips. My whole life I’ve had naturally thin lips and my passion for cosmetics, particularly lipstick, only magnified my desire for a fuller pout. Despite numerous trials with lip enhancers like the Buxom Dolly On Stage and Too Faced Lip Injection Lip plumper, and learning how to overline my lips (Thanks, Kylie Jenner), the quest for the perfect full lips seemed unattainable. It became clear that lip filler injections were the next step, especially considering the natural decrease in collagen and hyaluronic acid as we age, which affects the plumpness and shape of your lips.

Demystifying Lip Filler Treatment

Lip filler is a cosmetic treatment that refines the volume and contour of the lips through dermal fillers, specifically hyaluronic acid-based fillers. These fillers are a natural component found in our bodies, and are known for their capacity to retain water molecules. They ensure that your lips look naturally plump.

Investing in Lip Injections

The cost of lip fillers can be significant, influenced by factors such as geographic location, the expertise of the injector, and the type of dermal filler selected. Aesthetic goals often determine the amount of filler used, with prices per syringe ranging from $500 to $1000. First time patients should note that this on the list of cosmetic procedures, which are typically not covered by insurance.

Longevity of Lip Fillers

The durability of hyaluronic acid fillers is generally 12-18 months, though individual metabolism rates can affect this. For example, younger patients might find their bodies metabolize the gel-like substance quickly, requiring more frequent treatments to maintain fuller lips.

Selecting a Reputable Provider

The decision of where to get lip injections is very important. You should consider various cosmetic treatment facilities, from high-end med spas to clinics overseen by members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Verify their credibility, review before-and-after photos of past patients, and assess their treatment plans. I chose Sand Lake Dermatology Center for their esteemed reputation and the natural-looking results they promised. I knew I wanted my final results to look more natural and after my first appointment with them, I knew that this office felt like the best way for me to get my treatments.

Preparing for your First Lip Filler Injections

Preparation is a vital first step in the lip filler procedure. Medical history should be discussed with your healthcare provider to avoid complications. It’s recommended to cease taking blood thinners like Ibuprofen and to halt the use of retinoids a week prior to the appointment to minimize side effects. An ice pack may be suggested to manage swelling post-procedure.

Visualization and Expectations

The anticipation can be daunting.  I spent hours on social media looking for lip filler results similar to my natural lip shape so I could decide what I did and did not want them to look like. One helpful tip for realistic expectations is to simulate fuller lips by creating an air pocket under your top lip and observing the effect in a mirror. This can help you see what your lips will look like when they have that fuller appearance to them.  Although I knew the results could vary based on the shape of the lips and how much filler was used.

The Injection Experience

Upon arriving for your lip filler appointment, expect to be greeted by a professional who will apply a topical numbing cream to the injection sites, ensuring minimal discomfort. The filler, often a hyaluronic acid filler like Restylane Silk or Juvederm, is injected with a thin needle to both the upper lip and lower lip, with precision to achieve the desired contour and volume, and perfect cupid’s bow.

Post-Procedure Results

Instantaneous results are one of the many perks of lip fillers. However, the immediate aftermath may involve swelling. Typically, swelling peaks within the first 24-48 hours and recedes soon after. An ice pack can be gently applied to manage this.

Managing Uncertainty

Post-treatment doubts are not uncommon. If the results are not as expected, a follow-up appointment can address any concerns. Hyaluronic acid fillers have the advantage of reversibility, with the enzyme hyaluronidase available to dissolve unwanted filler.

Aftercare for Optimal Recovery

A proper healing process is vital for achieving the best results. While lip filler has minimal downtime, full recovery typically spans 2-4 weeks for the fillers to settle completely. During this period, applying Arnica can be beneficial for bruising, and avoiding strenuous activities is recommended. Talk with your provider for specific aftercare instructions tailored to your treatment plan.

Reflecting on the Lip Filler Journey

Reflecting on the entire process, I am so happy with the outcome of my lip filler injections. I had considered a having Botox to do a lip flip prior to my appointment.  But decided against that and instead went with 1 syringe of Juvederm Volbella.

Taking the Leap into Lip Fillers

If you’re contemplating your first lip filler procedure, begin with thorough research. Use the internet to seek out reputable providers, read the terms of use of their services, and consider scheduling complimentary consultations to discuss your lip shape goals. Remember to document your journey with before and after photos and if you love them as much as I do, plan for touch ups every 6 months to a year. Then enjoy some of your favorite lip products, like I love this on Buxom Dolly On Stage Lip Plumper.
